Acute toxicity of the water-soluble fraction of diesel in Prochilodus vimboidesKner (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Celina Alcoforado; Lenz,Dominik; Brandão,Geisamanda Pedrini; Chippari-Gomes,Adriana Regina; Gomes,Levy Carvalho.
Diesel oil can be a source of contamination in aquatic environments, mainly as a result of spills. The effects of the water-soluble fraction of diesel (WSF) on Prochilodus vimboideswere assessed. Fish were exposed to three different WSF dilutions for up to 96 h and were compared to a control group. Damages in the fragments of DNA were analyzed using the Comet assay. The presence of erytrocyts abnormalities was assessed by micronucleus test. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and the accumulation of copper in gills were also analyzed. Fish exposed for 96 h had higher rates of damage than those exposed for 24 h. There was no significant difference regarding the presence of micronuclei between exposed and control fish...

AVALIAÇÃO DA PRODUÇÃO DO BIODIESEL DE SOJA E DOS PREÇOS AO PRODUTOR E AO CONSUMIDOR, NO BRASIL, EM 2008 AgEcon
Baccarin, Jose Giacomo; Gandra, Anamaria Guimaraes.
This work evaluated the effective and potential importance of biodiesel for soybean production in Brazil and its regions in 2008, as well as if the prices of biodiesel had been adjusted according to the interests of producers and consumers. Four situations were considered: the first one refers to the application of Law 11.097/05, which resulted in a production of 1.164,33 million liters of biodiesel (912,83million liters of soybean biodiesel), which corresponds to 2,6% of the national diesel consumption in 2008. Alternatively, an estimate was made of what would happen if the percentage of the mixture had been 4%, 5% or 8,3%. In 2008, it is estimated that 8,5 % of the soybean produced in Brazil was directed for biodiesel production, and this percentage...

Characterization of diesel degrading bacterial species from contaminated tropical ecosystem BABT
Nwinyi,Obinna Chukwuemeka; Kanu,Ijeoma Akudo; Tunde,Ayano; Ajanaku,Kolawole Oluseyi.
The bacterial diversity in a diesel contaminated tropical soil was investigated using diesel oxidation in gradient cultures dynamics (pH and OD) of the pure cultures. The diesel dependent growths of these isolates were assessed for 15 days by monitoring the gradient fluxes in the pH and Optical density OD of the media. Results showed an increase in OD as well as fluctuations in pH values. The mean OD data obtained was 0.515- 1.187 with pH of 6.95-7.2. From the morphological and biochemical characterization and comparison with respect to the standard references, the isolates S1P1, S3P3, S2P2, S2P1,and S3P2 were presumably the members of the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Mycobacterium species. From the study, it was apparent that the tropical ecosystems...

Comparative study of energy costs in irrigation according to the new brazilian electricity tariff model REA
ALMEIDA,ALEX N. DE; COELHO,RUBENS D.; FARÍAS,ASDRÚBAL J.; MONTEIRO,RODRIGO O. C.; COSTA,JÉFFERSON DE O..
ABSTRACT The tariff flags on Brazil came into force in January 2015, applied to all electrical distribution agents of the national interconnected system (SIN) and all final consumers are being charged for this new model. Given this, the cost of electricity in irrigation suffered representative additions involving searches of alternatives, such as the use of diesel engines. This study aimed to analyze the costs and the total annual costs of pumping with diesel and electric operation in 3 regions of Brazil, considering the application of the tariff flags. We concluded that the Southeast region (SE) features an hourly cost of electricity above the Central-West (CO) and the Northeast (NE) regions at any adopted tariff, regardless of the time of pumping and the...

Estimated atmospheric emissions from biodiesel and characterization of pollutants in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre-RS Anais da ABC (AABC)
Teixeira,Elba C.; Mattiuzi,Camila D.P.; Feltes,Sabrina; Wiegand,Flavio; Santana,Eduardo R.R..
The purpose of the present study was to estimate emissions of some pollutants (CO, NOX, HC, SOX, and PM) in diesel fleet due to the addition of biodiesel in different blends, as well as to assess atmospheric pollutant concentrations in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre (MAPA). The methodology was based on inventories from mobile sources based on US EPA's technical report. Regarding air quality the following parameters were determined: PM10, PM2.5, CO, NOX, O3, SO2, HC and PAHs. The results showed a decrease for emissions PM, CO, and HC, and a slight increase for NOX. The characterization of atmospheric pollutants in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre showed that they are influenced by mobile sources, particularly diesel vehicles. The diagnosis of...

Genotoxic effects of the diesel water-soluble fraction on the seahorse Hippocampus reidi (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) during acute exposure Rev. Bras. Zool.
Santos,Celina Alcoforado; Novaes,Larissa Simões; Gomes,Levy Carvalho.
The high toxicity of diesel components makes oil spills a threat to the biota in coastal marine environments. The genotoxic effect of the diesel water-soluble fraction (DWSF) on Hippocampus reidi (Ginsburg, 1933) was assessed. Fish were exposed to three different DWSF dilutions for up to 96 hours, and genotoxicity was analyzed using the micronuclei test and the comet assay. The micronuclei test revealed no significant differences between any of the DWSF dilutions and the control in the 24-hours period; however, micronuclei increased in fish exposed to 1:500 and 1:100 DWSF dilutions for 96 hours. For all dilutions, there was an increase in micronuclei in fish exposed for 96 hours when compared to those exposed for 24 hours. The tested dilutions increased...

O FUTURO DO BIODIESEL COMO COMBUSTÍVEL SUSTENTÁVEL NO BRASIL Ciências Agrárias

Selected Fuel Properties of Biodiesel Produced from Shea Butter and Palm Kernel Oil CIGR Journal
Adesoji, Ogunlade Clement; Simeon, Jekayinfa Olayinka; B., Olaniyi A..
Tranesterification reaction was carried out on raw Shea Butter Oil (SBO) and Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) to separate the ester from glycerol using ethanol in the presence of potassium hydroxide as catalyst. The properties of biodiesel (ethyl ester) obtained from varying proportions of diesel were experimentally determined and compared with that of conventional diesel. The fatty acid profile of the oil samples were determined using standard methods. Four blends (10, 20, 25 and 30%) of SBO and PKO by volume with diesel oil were produced and fuel properties determined include viscosity, relative density, specific gravity, flash, cloud and pour points. Mean values of the six fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic) obtained for shea butter and palm kernel...

The Mutagenic Potential Caused by the Emissions from Combustion of Crude Glycerin and Diesel Fuel BABT
Mazak,Daniel Terruggi; Ávila,Ivonete; Crnkovic,Paula Manoel; Cordoba,Aymer Yeferson Maturana; Pagliuso,Josmar Davilson.
This study evaluated the use of crude glycerin as an alternative of energy generation to replace the traditional fuels. The Tradescantia stamen hair mutation assay (Trad-SH) was applied to study the mutagenic effects caused by the emissions generated in the direct combustion of diesel oil and glycerin in a flame tube furnace. Tradescantia inflorescences were exposed to gaseous emissions from the combustion tests in a fumigation chamber for 30-40 min. The analysis of variance and the Tukey test were applied to compare the differences between six test groups (intoxicated with emissions from glycerin and diesel oil combustion) and a control group. Only one glycerin group showed statistical differences (0.05), possibly due to the complexity of the burning...

Using stated preferences to estimate the environmental benefits of using biodiesel fuel in diesel engines AgEcon
Jeanty, Pierre Wilner; Hitzhusen, Frederick J..
Using biodiesel fuel to reduce emissions from diesel engines is an area of increasing interest. Many environmental benefits associated with biodiesel are not traded in markets and their estimation requires economic valuation methods applied to non-market goods and services. This paper presents the results of a contingent valuation survey conducted in 2006 in two Ohio regions to estimate willingness to pay for air pollution reduction arising from using biodiesel fuel in diesel engines. The double bounded parametric formulation was used to estimate mean WTP ranging from $157 to $457. These results yield estimated aggregate benefits ranging from $123 to $429 million and can be used as a starting point for cost-benefit analysis.

Willingness to Pay for Biodiesel in Diesel Engines: A Stochastic Double Bounded Contingent Valuation Survey AgEcon
Jeanty, Pierre Wilner; Haab, Timothy C.; Hitzhusen, Frederick J..
The double bounded dichotomous choice format has been proven to improve efficiency in contingent valuation models. However, this format has been criticized due to lack of behavioral and statistical consistencies between the first and the second responses. In this study a split sampling methodology was used to determine whether allowing respondents to express uncertainty in the follow-up question would alleviate such inconsistencies. Results indicate that allowing respondents to express uncertainty in the follow-up question was effective at reducing both types of inconsistencies while efficiency gain is maintained.
